How to distinguish an orthodontic specialist from a general dentist who places braces:

Some general dentists in Orange County will have you believe they are orthodontists (specialists) when in fact they have not had the extra rigorous training that Dr. Olsen underwent to become an orthodontic specialist. Going to a general dentist for braces is akin to asking your general doctor to deliver your baby or to perform a surgical procedure.

Because Orthodontics affects not only teeth but also overall facial balance & the smile, If incorrect decisions are made by those who are not adequately trained, the results may not only be sub-optimal but may also do irreparable damage. While a general dentist may charge less, most people feel that their smile (or their child’s smile) is important enough to merit the best care, and the risk of seeing a non-specialist is not worth the small savings.

Unfortunately, there is a lot of confusion as to who in the community is a true orthodontist (specialist) and who is a dentist who merely likes to do braces. While it can be difficult to see through the misrepresentation offered by general dentists who do braces, here are a few keys to differentiating a general practitioner from an orthodontic specialist. Because general dentists can’t legally advertise themselves as specialists, they will use such terms as ‘Orthodontics and Family Dentistry’ or will advertise membership in such organizations as The American Orthodontic Society (www.orthodontics.com) or the International Association of Orthodontics (www.iaortho.org/introduction.aspx) to make it appear that they are orthodontic specialists. Both of these organizations are created by general dentists for general dentists who like to do braces and do not in fact denote an orthodontic specialist.

In order to figure out if the doctor is truly an orthodontist, you may have to dig deep to find out the truth by asking the following specific questions:

Does the doctor do cleanings & fillings as well as braces?
(A true orthodontist / orthodontic specialist does not perform general dentistry)

What orthodontic specialty program did the doctor graduate from and how long was the program?
(ADA Accredited Programs are a minimum of 2 years long, not just a few weekends)

Is the Doctor a Member of the AAO?
Membership in the American Association of Orthodontists (www.braces.org) is the only organization in the United States that denotes a certified Orthodontic Specialist
